Smithfield, NC – Multiple Injuries in Wrong-Way Crash on I-40 Near MM 315

Smithfield, NC (July 7, 2025) – Several people suffered injuries after a wrong-way crash late Saturday night, July 5, on Interstate 40 in Johnston County.

The crash happened around 11:15 p.m. near mile marker 315. Authorities say a blue 2018 Toyota Camry was traveling east in the westbound lanes. It first sideswiped a pickup truck, then spun out and slammed head-on into a 2006 white Buick LaCrosse.

The Buick’s driver, Brandon Wardell, 23, sustained minor injuries. His passenger, Keyona Davis, 20, suffered critical injuries and remains in the ICU at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh.

The driver of the Camry, identified as 40-year-old Tammy Savage, was also hospitalized at WakeMed. Officials confirmed she will face charges for wrong-way driving and careless and reckless driving.

The pickup truck driver was not injured. Troopers said all individuals involved wore seatbelts. The reason for the wrong-way travel remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with those hurt in this serious crash, especially Keyona Davis. Authorities continue to examine what led to this collision.

Wrong-Way Accidents on North Carolina Highways

Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of accidents on North Carolina highways. When vehicles travel against the flow of traffic on high-speed roads like I-40, the risk of head-on collisions increases sharply.

These crashes often lead to devastating injuries or fatalities. Victims may suffer from spinal injuries, brain trauma, or long-term physical damage. Even those with minor injuries face emotional stress and costly medical care.

In many cases, wrong-way accidents stem from driver confusion, impaired driving, or distraction. Victims and their families may pursue compensation if another driver’s negligence caused the crash. That can include payments for hospital bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

In North Carolina, an experienced personal injury attorney can help prove fault and seek justice. This is especially important in cases involving severe or life-threatening injuries. The legal process can feel overwhelming, but an attorney can help gather evidence, speak with witnesses, and manage the insurance companies on your behalf.

If you or someone you love was injured in a wrong-way crash in Johnston County or anywhere in North Carolina, consider talking to a local attorney. Legal support can help you recover financially while you focus on healing.
