Albuquerque, NM – Fatal Accident on WB I-40 Involving Stolen Vehicle Suspect

Albuquerque, NM (September 18, 2025) – A fatal accident occurred on westbound I-40 on Wednesday, September 17, when a vehicle struck a suspected auto theft suspect. New Mexico State Police reported that around 12:30 p.m., an officer noticed a pickup truck stopped in the far right lane near the Carlisle exit, blocking traffic.

The officer learned the truck had been stolen and identified the driver as 53-year-old Dale Hinds, wanted for multiple offenses, including resisting arrest and possession of controlled substances. Hinds ran across the eastbound lanes and attempted to cross the westbound lanes when he was struck by a vehicle and killed.
