North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported the crash occurred just outside Benson, near Woodhall Dairy Dr. Troopers arrived at the scene to find a black pickup truck and a gray car damaged in the roadway. A third vehicle—a blue car—was located in the woods off the highway.

Investigators later determined that the driver of the blue car had been traveling the wrong way on I-40 West. The wrong-way vehicle caused the crash involving the other two vehicles, according to authorities.

Troopers confirmed that multiple people were injured, including the driver of the blue car. All injured individuals were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The current conditions of those involved have not been released.
